As an American soldier currently serving overseas, I am so glad to finally have my copy of FarenHYPE 9/11. I’ve now watched both Moore’s video and this response to it. I came to the conclusion that Michael Moore is a big dumb animal! He seems to hate America. This video clearly shows how deceitful he really is. The most moving part was watching the wounded soldier discuss how upset he was that Moore exploited his injury to make Bush look bad. Everyone should see this.

To form an intelligent, balanced opinion, you have to view all points of view on a given subject. Given the biased, manipulated manner in which Michael “Bush eats babies!” Moore presents his case, the only way to get an alternate opinion is to view a movie such as this, which not only presents a counterpoint to Moore’s arguement, but also talks to the very same people that Moore claims to have interviewed for his movie. The best part, for me, is that FahrenHYPE 9/11 doesn’t even go in to the manipulative movie-making tactics that Moore employes to fool the audience, it simply lays out the statements given by the people in Moore’s movie and let’s the viewer decide.

If you love a good heroine story chock full of romance and political intrigue with some humor tossed in then this series is for you. I think its safe to compare it to Mysterious Play (Fushigi Yugi) as there are a few similarities between them namely the romantic circles this series leads you on in addition to a bit of the political crazyness that also somewhat surrounded Fushigi Yugi (ie: the wars)

In any case if romance is what your looking for with a steady moving plot line you may enjoy this series. I do have to warn though it takes a few episodes to really get the feel of this series but I found myself watching seasons 1 and 2 and being pleased with both.

The more anime a person takes in, the clearer it becomes that lumping all Japanese animation into a single classification is an absolutely ridiculous notion. A majority of the anime I find myself attracted to could almost be mistaken for some of the finer American made “cartoons” save for the fact that the DVDs contain the original Japanese vocal track. Enter The Story of Saiunkoku from Geneon, distributed through Funimation. Not only is the show overflowing with Japanese sensibilities and visual charm, it’s built on a solid foundation of Asain culture so thoroughly that there’s no mistaking its origin regardless of the language track to which you find yourself listening.

Coming in at a whopping 975-minute runtime, The Story of Saiunkoku Complete Season One box set consists of 39 episodes spanning 9 discs. The packaging breaks it down into five thin pack cases housed in a charming cardboard outer slipcase. The show wears an appropriate if not slightly conservative TV 13 & Up rating due to a few adult-themes (war, good versus evil on an epic scale), some light sexual innuendo (a king everyone thinks is homosexual), and a little bit of drama.

Language options are typical sub & dub meaning both the original Japanese vocal track is present as well the choice of an English dub (either presented in Stereo) with the option of running English subtitles available with either vocal track.

Extras include textless opening and ending themes and a host of Geneon anime previews on each and every one of the nine DVDs.

The story, which has to be watched to be fully understood (or appreciated for that matter) goes something like this: Shurei, daughter of a broke aristocrat in fictional medieval country Saiunkoku has everything it takes to be a member of government except for the opportunity (because women are prohibited in this society).

Her father, a glorified librarian with a title, discovers the opportunity of a lifetime for young Shurei as the king’s personal consort. Using his influence, her father is able to secure the position so that Shurei can put her motherly instincts to good use (and hopefully secure some wealth in the process) by supervising the young (19 year-old) king of the nation while injecting a little motivation and ambition into his routine.

Suspecting an arrogant and close-minded ruler, Shurei charges into the role only to discover a gentle, shy and insecure young ruler who just so happens to be of similar age. They strike up a solid relationship in no time, each forcing the other to change their view of members on such opposite sides of society’s spectrum. King Ryuki, inspired by Shurei’s knowledge, passion and ambition soon takes a more active role in the governing of his land while simultaneously providing Shurei an opportunity to put her skills to use despite the fact that women are not able to pursue such ambitions directly.

Now I’m not sure whether or not that summary captures the scope of the prose, so I will follow it by saying that those expecting wild action scenes, hilarious dialog sessions, passionate lovemaking sequences or even a quick moving plot structure will probably be disappointed. The truth is that The Story of Saiunkoku is an anime piece that requires, in fact demands, a certain level of patience and commitment from its viewer if satisfaction is to be found. In other words it relies on very few gimmicks along the way to tell its tale and makes no apologies for doing so.

The grand prose is methodic and evenly paced with character development taking the foreground of each episode. Sure there are moments sprinkled about that may earn a chuckle or build a little tension, but they serve to break the monotony of the show’s rhythmic progression rather than to act as a selling point on their own.

The visuals are an interesting blend of traits with character models absolutely rife with detail, occasionally at the expense of the backgrounds. Then just as quickly, that relationship can completely inverse with background art that is simply stunning to behold. Again though, the viewer gets a definite sense that the show’s creators deliberately avoided going too far in any single direction that could possibly detract from the story being told.

The fact that the first season consists of 39 episodes spanning nine DVDs should act as some indication to the type of pacing one is to expect. Almost like sipping hot coffee or sitting down to read the newspaper, Saiunkoku is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace and is a sort of acquired taste. Action junkies may be quick to dismiss the show once the opening narration (which is almost like something from Lord of the Rings) fades to a semi–contemporary setting where a young teacher tells the tale to her wide-eyed students and similarly diehard fans of the risqué will likely grow tired of waiting for lead character Shurei Hong and King Ryuki Shi to just hurry up and get it on.

The viewer who will get the most from this series is most likely someone who enjoys Japanese culture and politics coupled to fantastic artwork and youthful protagonists. I wouldn’t even think of suggesting that the show’s for everyone but for the few it really is for, prepare to be impressed.

This viewer rented the DVD form of AMERICAN GANGSTER, having passed it by in the theatrical run, thinking that it was yet another ‘crime and corruption in New York’ genre film. It was surprising to discover that this very long film (just under three hours in the Unrated version) is completely riveting and in a way far different than the usual gangster film: this story, based on real people as outlined in an article by Mark Jacobson (transformed for the screen by Steven Zaillian), and while it has its share of grisly killings, it seems more concerned with the issues of integrity in the face of police corruption as embodied in the character of Richie Roberts, the etiology of the heroin use escalation following the Vietnam War, and the presence of a ‘Black Mafia’ lead by one Frank Lucas. It is delivered with compelling gusto and intelligence by director Ridley Scott and has some of the best acting of the year. In other words, this is not a film to be lightly dismissed as a Hollywood retread, but instead it is a tense drama with many very fine points.

Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) follows the footsteps of his idol Bumpy (Clarence Williams III) who ‘ran’ the Harlem streets, and when Bumpy dies, Lucas inherits his mantle. Lucas is wise, cunning, a gentleman, a powerhouse of ideas, and quickly finds a way to bring the best uncut heroin from the Far East to the streets of New York at a price that undercuts the other mobsters’ product. To establish his control he enlists his family, including his brother Huey (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and rapidly becomes the kingpin of the streets.

Simultaneously within the NYPD we meet Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) whose personal life is a mess but who, with his partner Lou (Ted Levine) discovers corruption in the NYPD and more particularly the Drug Enforcement sector of the police: Detective Trupo (Josh Brolin) works with the existing drug lords, grabs their drugs and money and then recycles both to his benefit. During a particular drug bust, Richie and Lou discover a stash of nearly a million dollars and turn the money into the police - a deed that makes the duo seem foolish and lose the respect of their fellow cops but establishes Roberts as a man who is committed to being a good detective.

From these two separate studies the film weaves the development of each character and the interaction between Roberts and Lucas we know will take place. The end result may be known to those who followed the story as it developed in the 1970s, but for those for whom this true story is new information, the resolution of the film is fast-paced, thrilling, illuminating, and just plain fine cinema. Both Washington and Crowe are in peak form, as are those in the many small roles (Ruby Dee, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Lymari Nadal, Carla Gugino, Cuba Gooding etc). This is more of a drama than an action film and while many may feel the final moments of the movie are weak, they do reveal the true ending of the story and say a lot about the narrow line between crime and criminal investigation. This is one of Ridley Scott’s most successful films and one that will be around for many years as a model for the medium. Grady Harp, February 08

American Gangster 2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition

In American Gangster Ridley Scott has created the perfect storm of an American movie masterpiece. An amazing group of actors, headlined by Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe, produces a very convincing period piece of 1970s New Jersey and New York and the crime culture that existed there. It’s hard to feel anything but shame watchig this movie. This movie is both believable and tragic, and it startles me that neither Crowe nor Washington received nominations for two incredible performances.

The Story and the Script

The story is supposed to be based on the real life exploits of Frank Lucas. Movies like this usually exaggerate. The fact that this movie is so believable makes it all the more tragic. There are no black and white characters and we are left to choose between murdering drug pushers and crooked cops.

The writing and the story structure are both excellent. The plot is developed slowly and masterfully. While there is less shooting and action than one would expect from such a tale, the movie is filled with drama and suspense.

Cinematography

They have managed to create a period piece here that is beautiful, gritty, real and romanticized. The framing of the actors and the skylines are beautiful. Much of the scenery and shots are darkly lit. This is most often used in the scenes with the police in their shadowy research rooms, clearly to juxtapose them against the Lucas empire, almost always shown in the light.

The first disk in the unrated edition is in a beautiful widescreen. Don’t know why they list this as full-screen, perhaps because there is a full screen version available on the other side. The

Acting and Direction

I don’t know whether it’s award winning acting or directing that makes the end result so good, but I would be willing to guess that it’s both. Denzel is steady and appears to be taking on a similar persona in his recent films. Crowe is more fantastic than even his normal performance, portraying the troubled police investigator caught between a crime ridden New York / New Jersey and the even more criminal Special Investigative Unit.

All the acting is great, and this movie could easily have won for best ensemble cast. Josh Brolin is solid in a limited though well executed part. The directing is textbook mastery.

Bottom line, this movie should have gotten nominated for best actor, best supporting actor, best direction and best picture. It probably should have one a few of those categories. Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises? Give me a break.

The nominations for art direction and for Ruby Dee as best supporting actress in a very limited role were not enough compared to the strength of this movie.

Features and Extras

The unrated extended edition has an entire disk of special features. The making-of extra is not just a featurette, it’s a feature-length documentary. You get an in-depth look into every aspect of the film’s creation.

There are also three in depth “case-files” on film research, script adaptation and police techniques.

The deleted scenes include an alternate opening sequence. Finally, the theatrical trailer includes writer and director feature commentary. A very nice set of extras indeed.

Conclusion

This is absolutely a masterful , one of the best this year. This DVD needs to be added to your collection.

As a huge fan of older films and music, I am very aware of the many attempts of studios and record companies to reissue and re-market a previously released product in a new and improved format. While many of these reissues are often superior to their previously released counterparts, I have never been one to buy into the “upgrades”. I feel that you don’t need to have the best sound, the crispest picture, or the excess of supplemental materials in order to enjoy a film and have it affect you. In all my years collecting music CD’s (particularly jazz) and DVDs, I think I’ve upgraded no more than three items from my collections.

I had been hearing for a while now about a new version of Seven Samurai coming out on Criterion that was supposed to have a brand new transfer from a recently discovered source that was to be greatly improved from any other previous edition. Being one of the most beloved films of all time (and one of mine as well), this has been creating alot of excitement in the world of film lovers. Being perfectly satisfied with my version of the Seven Samurai DVD from 1998, I had no plans to upgrade, but a side by side comparison on an internet site peaked my curiosity. And yesterday, being at a local retailer, I saw it on the shelf and decided to spring for it.

Let me tell you….if ANY of you are on the fence about this one, particularly those of you who are big fans of this amazing film, I advise you to go for it. The difference between this edition and the previous edition is so drastic that I could not believe my eyes and ears. I have never had this experience with a DVD before, but the improvements in picture and sound quality are SO great that I actually felt like I was watching Seven Samurai for the first time. The clarity of the picture is absolutely amazing. The glorious black and white tones are much richer, but what’s most impressive is how nearly all the imperfections, scratches, and blemishes that were so prevalent on the previous edition have been removed. You can tell why this edition took so long to get released….Criterion obviously took alot of time with this one. Their efforts paid off. Also, the sound has been greatly improved as well. Not only have they cleaned up the original mono soundtrack, but they’ve added a stereo surround track as well. Normally, I cringe at these “new and improved” soundtracks on old films, but this track does not sound artificial at all, but rather more like an enhanced version of the mono track. The stereo surround track together with the gorgeous new picture made for a unique experience watching the film. You are still watching the great Kurosawa classic that you know and love, but at the same time it seems that even more life has been breathed into it. Didn’t think that was possible for such a perfect film, but Criterion proved any doubter wrong.

Please keep in mind that I haven’t even gotten to the bonus materials, the commentary tracks, nor the very attractive book yet. And there isn’t much more that I can say about this amazing film that hasn’t already been said. Just based on the presentation of the film itself in this new package from Criterion, I would highly recommend to everybody who loves this film and is thinking about upgrading their version of the film, that you do so. Its beautiful. And remember, this is coming from someone who doesn’t generaly care for “upgrades”.

Akira Kurosawa made “Seven Samurai” because he wanted to make a real “jidai-geki,” a real period-film that would present the past as meaningful, while also being an entertaining film. Kurosawa considered “Rashomon,” the film rightfully credited with making the West aware of the Japanese cinema, with being neither. But in his attempt to make a truly “realistic” film, Kurosawa redefined the conflict at the heart of Japanese films. Before “Seven Samurai” this conflict was that of love versus duty, where the central character is compelled by fate to sacrifice what he loves in the name of duty. In “Seven Samurai” the focus remains on duty, yet the conflict is now between the real and the pretended. Calling yourself a samurai does not make you one, something proven time and time again in the film, from the test of skill turned deadly between Kyuzo (Seiji Miyaguchi) and the tall samurai to the first appearance of Kikuchiyo (Toshirô Mifune), with his stolen pedigree. Like Katshushiro (Ko Kimura), the youngster who wants to learn from the master, Kambei (Takashi Shimura), the audience is educated as to the true nature of the samurai.

For me this film deals with the heroic, albeit in realistic terms. I have shown the film in World Literature classes, after students have read Homer’s “Iliad” and as they begin reading Cervantes’ “Don Quixote.” Within that context, compared to the brutal arrogance of Achilles and the gentle insanity of Quixote, the heroic qualities of the seven samurai become clear. Their inspiration extends to some of the villagers. Manzo (Kamatari Fujiwara) is crazed with fear over the virtue of his daughter, Shino (Keiko Tsushima), and Rikichi (Yoshio Tsuchiya) fights to avenge the disgrace of his wife and his precipitating the death of Heihachi (Minoru Chiaki), but it is the comic Yohei (Bokuzen Hidari), who finds within himself the ability to fight, a die a tragic death, who is the true barometer for what the samurai mean to the village. But the greatest tragedy is that despite this most noble effort and the bodies buried in honor at the top of the village cemetery, this has been but a temporary union between the villagers and the samurai. When Kambei declares, “We have lost again,” he redefines the battles: it was not to kill all the bandits, it was to find a true place in the world. Yet we should have already known this, for the painful truth was driven home when Kyuzo, the master swordsman, is gunned down from behind. No better proof is needed in this film of the bitter truth that the world is not fair.

Mifune is the maniacal spirit of this film, as the faux-samurai Kikuchiyo, the dancing whirlwind whose emotions overwhelm everything including himself. But it is Shimura as Kambei, who embodies the mentor mentality with a minimum of effort, evoking more by rubbing his hand over his shaved head or giving a single piercing look than by any spoken dialogue. Even in a strong ensemble these performances stand out, for clearly different reasons. To fully appreciate Kurosawa’s mastery in “Seven Samurai” you need to watch the film several times to better appreciate the way he constructs scenes, using contrasting images, evocative music and varying the length of cuts to affect tempo. For example, look carefully at how the early scene of the farmers searching the streets for samurai and the later sequence where Katsushiro watches Kyuzo and Kikuchiyo waiting for the bandit scouts to return to their horses. Both of these scenes are superb primers to Kurosawa’s style.

For years we had to put with the 160-minute version of the film that was made for export, which was actually called “The Magnificent Seven” until John Strugis’s Western remake. Fortunately, “Seven Samurai” has been restored to full 208-minute glory, saved from being a lamentable cinematic tragedy on a par with “Greed,” “The Magnificent Ambersons,” and “Ivan the Terrible.” There is a sense in which “Seven Samurai” is truly my favorite film, because it was the one that instilled in me a love of cinema, of the craft and art of movie making, of compelling me to understand intellectually how Kurosawa was skillfully manipulating my emotions. The final battle sequences, fought and filmed in a torrent of rain, exhausting characters and audience alike with its increasingly relentless tempo, is given its potency because of the human elements that have been established in all that has taken place before hand. “Seven Samurai” is a magnificent film against which the vast majority of epics pale in comparison. Not even Kurosawa scaled these heights ever again.

After the release of Volumes 1 & 2 most fans were ecstatic to be able to own the first three and a half seasons of this classic animated series on studio released DVD. The problem with Disney is you can never tell if they will finish releasing a series or cancel it because of poor sales or God knows why. Luckily fans of this series will be able to collect more episodes this September 22nd with the further release of X-men: The Animated Series with Volumes 3 & 4. Volume four is confirmed to contain the following fourteen episodes from the fourth season of the show spread across two discs:

Really every episode from this series can be considered a fan favorite but more noticable in this collection is the four part Beyond Good and Evil saga as well as The Phalanx Covenant, Sanctuary and Family Ties.

The audio & video quality we can expect will be the same as that of the first two volumes. Episodes tended to be in the same quality they aired with minor compression issues that go unnoticed by most and didn’t impede on my personal viewing enjoyment. Also the further we go into the series we should notice a slow steady improvement on the actual animation quality of the show.

There are no special features on these volumes but given the fact we’re dealing with Disney that’s to be expected. Television was better in the nineties. Thanks for your time.

In my opinion, X-Men, Batman TAS, Spider-Man, Animaniacs, Power Rangers, Eek the Cat, Bobby’s World, Tiny Toons and all the other shows that were featured on Fox Kids were the very best shows. X-Men, in spite of being a Saturday morning cartoon gathered very high ratings. In fact, it was so successful that it ran for a whopping 76 episodes with a total of 5 seasons, all the way from 1992 to 1997. In fact, it is the longest running Marvel animated show with Spider-Man being the second longest. X-Men has often been compared to Batman the Animated Series in terms of quality.

We can now witness more adventure as episodes from season 3 and 4 are now being released. X-Men closely followed some storylines from the comics. In this one, we witness Magneto building Asteroid M, a sanctuary for mutants, Wolverine battle Silver Samurai and the X-Men even clash in an epic battle with the immortal god-like mutant Apocalypse as he plans to reshape the universe in his own evil ways. We’ll even encounter Mr.Sinister as he teams with Apocalypse and Magneto who reluctantly battle along side the X-Men to battle Apocalypse.

X-Men is something for all ages. Kid and teens will love the action and adventure, while adults will appreciate the well written episodes and how some of them follow the comics. And of course, everybody will appreciate the top-quality animation created by some of the greatest animation studios of the day and everyone will love the nicely drawn awesome looking characters who bear great resemblance to the X-Men of comic book artist Jim Lee and writer Chris Claremont.

In case you’re a fan of X-Men, Marvel, good action, emotional scenes or epic battles of good vs evil or if you even watched this on Fox Kids during the fantastic era of the 90s, don’t miss X-Men! If you got the first volume and volume 2, then I,m sure you’ll adore volume 3 and volume 4 and if you haven’t experienced X-Men, it might just be a good time to grab both new volumes and prepare for epic adventures featuring Marvel’s mutant team.

Sanctuary Part 2: As the X-Men battle Cortez who temps to take over Asteroid M, Magneto returns to reclaim his place on the throne.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 1: As Cyclops and Jean prepare to wed, Mr.Sinister drops by and kidnaps Jean and takes her to an unknown world and learns that Apocalypse has plans for her.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 2: The X-Men figure out that Apocalypse is after Psylocke and other mutants who posses telepathic abilities. They even have a run in with Angel. The X-Men must figure out why Apocalypse is after psychics.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 3: Professor Xavier and the X-Men are taken to a place known as the Axis of Time and realizes that Apocalypse plans to use the psychics to recreate the universe in his own will. Cable heads to the Axis of Time to stop Apocalypse once and for all.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 4: In the final part of this episode, an epic battle between the X-Men, the psychics, Cable and Apocalypse will decide the fate of the immortal mutant once and for all.

Have Yourself a Morlock Little Christmas: It’s Christmas time at the X-Men’s mansion and Wolverine, Storm and Jubilee have a run in with The Morlocks who have an ill member of the family. Will everyone have a happy Christmas? Will Jean survive the wrath of Gambit’s competitive cooking?

My children adore this cartoon. We first saw it in England while visiting friends. I’m so excited it is coming to the U.S. now!! Its very well done, computer animation, involves the adventures of a little boy named Pocoyo (age 4)and his friends, Pato the duck and Ellie the Elephant. Its all about friendship and discovery. Even my 8 year old adores it but it is really age appropriate for 2-4 year olds. I am very excited to show this cartoon to my preschoolers! Its funny, entertaining while touching on core values of friendship.

Pocoyo is the most fantastic visual and learning environmnent for young children under 1 year old. It has a white background with very bright colour characters and good patterns of behaviour and language learning.

It revolves around the baby Pocoyo, (Ms) Elly the pink Elephant, Loula the Dog, the always-cool Pato the duck, and sleepy bird.

The hallmark of any good children’s product is being able to appeal to the adults. This is amusing enough that you will enjoy watching it with your child, even the 10th time. Enjoy!

I got the new Archie’s Funhouse dvds in the mail today from Amazon (I had them sent overnight)…and they do feature the first appearance of Sabrina The Teenage Witch on TV as she has her first day at Riverdale! The first appearance of Sabrina is on the bonus TV special “Archie & His New Pals” which is on the third dvd in the set. Also included on the third disc are bonus Funhouse epsodes which were originally on “The Archie Comedy Hour” and they also feature a few guest appearances by Sabrina & her aunts & Salem The Cat!! The other two dvds in the set feature the regular Funhouse episodes which were basically comical silliness with Archie & the gang but lots of FUN!!They also include Jukebox which is a selection of music videos by The Archies including the music video of the Archies hit “Sugar Sugar” which ALSO featured Sabrina in the music video running a kissing booth and performing all sorts of neat magic on the guys as the song “Sugar Sugar” plays!I love this set and I cant wait until they release “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” next month on DVD!! Its something I have been waiting a long time for.The picture quality on this set as it was on the last Archie set released last year is really good. Im very happy with it. Also there is a documentry with the voice of The Archies included on the third dvd in the set as well….Pick it up!! If you loved Archie cartoons in the 70’s or Sabrina The Teenage Witch cartoons in the 70’s I think you will love these!!!

What I failed to remember was that each year “The Archies” shows changed a lot. I was hoping to get some cartoons that maintained a story. Or even I enjoyed the year when Archie had Dick Tracy, Broom Hilda and other cartoons on. This particular season had neither. It was basically Laugh-In with the Archie characters. While these little skits that appear may of been funny at the time…today they appear as a bunch of dated short gags. I played the first episode for my daughter and even she lost interest before one episode was done. I wish I would picked the volume with Archie on the cover or even the Sabrina edition. Previous reviewers give the 5 stars and I write this review to give you a different view point. What you get here that may be a plus to some is you get more music from the Archies….myself I wanted the cartoons. This was a purchase I regret making even at less that $20.

Theres a new villain in town besides the androids and its looks like hes from the future. Goku is still sick, but gets better in this saga.He came to absorb the androids to become complete. He seems to be another creation of Dr. Gero’s. Piccolo merges with kami so that he can fight this new power. The new villains name is cell. Vegeta and Goku realize that they need to be stronger and ascend so they decide to go to the hyperbolic time chamber and train, because in the time chamber you can get a whole year worth of training in one day. While this is happening piccolo fights android 17. Cell shows up and absorbed 17. Vegeta and Trunks training is complete by this time and head towards cell is defeat him. Now it is gohan and gokus turn. Vegeta finally gets to cell and shows him his new power. Cell gets beat up and asks vegeta if he can find 18 and become complete for a better fight. Vegeta agrees and trunks trys to stop him. While this is happening bulma creates a device to deactivate the androids. Krillin goes to find them and when he does he cant. Cell absorbeds androis 18 and becomes complete. Also, gohan becomes a SSJ. As you can see alot of thing happened in this saga. As always this is a must have for DBZ fans.

Trunks and Krillin join Bulma at the crash site of the mysterious time capsule and find an eerie clue? The shell of a large, locust-like creature. Whatever arrived in that time capsule isn’t human. Cell was made by Dr. Gero to grab the cells of some of the amazing fighters in the world.

This late German silent is very much an action and mountain-climbing disaster film, of which genre “The Holy Mountain” is probably the best remembered, and in comparison “The White Hell of Pitz Palu” probably falls short in a few areas. Firstly, there is not much of a story or plot as it revolves around three main characters who have a climbing accident, get stuck and inevitably need to be rescued. Without a doubt the action and disaster scenes (climbing walls of ice, falls and avalanches) are expertly done, and the cinematography is close to breathtaking. In fact, watching many of the scenes - beautiful melting and dripping icicles, moody clouds, glistening walls of ice and simply the rugged snow-capped mountains made me wish it could be in colour in order to be absolutely perfect. From a visual viewpoint, “The White Hell of Pitz Palu” can’t be flawed, and I’m sure that anyone interested in mountaineering (or even photography of such mountains) will find this film exciting and interesting. But I’m not a mountain nor snow and ice person, and I usually prefer a good, more complex story and interesting characters, and for such viewers this film might feel rather slow and too much of the same thing. Although the orchestral musical score is new and suited to the scenes, it might not be to everyone’s taste and I found it rather heavy at times - but perhaps that was the intention after all, since ominous big mountains do create that kind of mood! Nevertheless, I can see plenty of merit in other aspects of this film such as the impressive visual, photographic qualities (the picture quality is very good, by the way) and also a glimpse into the lives of the characters such as Dr Krafft who lost his wife in an earlier mountain climbing adventure, and who thereafter `haunted’ the mountain, roaming around alone - until he meets a young honeymoon couple who change everything for him. The emphasis and focus in this film are not on the story or people, but rather on the physical mountain itself and above all, the forces of nature: wind, ice, storms and mere mortals staying alive in the ruthless elements. For more story and character angles with the same star (Leni Riefenstahl) and also directed by Arnold Franck, “The Holy Mountain” might still be the best of this `mountain film’ genre for the general viewer.
